Music Therapy

Why Music Therapy?

Sometimes, things may feel too big or too tricky to put into words, or words may not available to us. Music Therapy is a creative, collaborative approach which uses music as a way to support whatever we may be going through at the time.

How is Music Therapy different to Music Lessons, Music Listening or Community Music Groups?

Music Therapy is an established therapeutic intervention, facilitated by HCPC registered Music Therapists. Although we are using music to communicate, the therapeutic relationship is at the heart of our process, and your Music Therapist will be holding and feeling all of those big feelings and what's happening in the room with you.

My approach

I understand that coming to therapy may be difficult, confusing, or overwhelming. I hope to offer a welcoming, protected, and supportive space where we may explore and reflect together. In our sessions, you may want to listen to music, make music together, write songs, or create artwork in response to or alongside music. You may want to talk things through before, during or after music, but there is also no expectation or requirement for there to be any talking. It is your space to use however works best for you and there's no right or wrong! Our Music Therapy sessions are psychodynamically informed and person-centred. This means I will always be thinking and reflecting with my therapy hat on, and you are at the focus of the sessions and the relationship.

Who is Music Therapy for?

The short answer is: everyone! If you feel that Music Therapy may be for you, then it's for you! The best way to know is to try an initial session, and then we can work together to see how Music Therapy may fit.

Do I have to be musical?

There is no expectation for you to have any musical skills or previous experience with music. Music therapy may be a helpful space for you if you feel particularly drawn to music, if you find that words aren't available or aren't enough, or if you want to explore creatively.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends. We will have an initial assessment, to establish whether Music Therapy will be suitable for you, and how we feel we may work together. After that, I suggest 12 sessions before we review together.
For Music Therapy with Children who may be fostered, adopted or in care, I recommend we work together for a minimum of 1 year.

How long will my sessions be?

That depends. Sessions may vary from 30 minutes to an hour. In our initial assessment, we can spend some time thinking about the most helpful time slot for you.

How much will my sessions be?

Each session is priced at £50, in accordance with the British Association for Music Therapy guidelines. There are many charities that may offer grants or support. Please contact us if finances are a barrier and you would like signposting to funding opportunities.
